What We Do

By , March 24, 2011

The Knights of Columbus at Sacred Heart parish is a Catholic, family, fraternal, service organization. This theme permeates the entire Service Program: all Church, community, council, family, pro-life, and youth activities.

Our services that we provide are designed to establish us as an influential and important organization within the parish community, elevate the status of the parish ministries, provide meaningful and relevant programs of action, build leadership, establish direct areas of responsibility, and ensure the success of council programs.

Our council works with many programs and we help change the parish community, church, and school where we worship, pray, live, work, and socialize.  The Sacred Heart  Knights of Columbus Council has been successful over many years because we depend on people taking an initial idea, bringing it to the Council, modifying it to suit specific situations and local needs, provide or raise the funds necessary to support an idea or activity, and then implementing the program in a way that makes it work.

Currently, our Council has many service activities it is involved in.  Here is a sample  listing of some of the projects we are currently supporting, have supported, or are currently leading at Sacred Heart:

  • Tootsie Roll Drive for Mentally Challenged Individuals
  • Parish and Religious Vocations
  • Adult and Children Religious Education
  • Keep Christ in Christmas project
  • Disaster Relief Funding
  • Pro-Life Events and Medical Choices
  • Coats for Kids project
  • Military and Veterans Personnel Assistance
  • Scholarship Support
  • Divine Mercy Sunday
  • Special Olympics
  • Habit for Humanity
  • Catholic Worker House
  • Widows and Orphans of Members
  • Parish and School Council Events

Examples of Some Recent Council Activities:

25th Anniversary Celebration – July, 2012

Our Council was founded in 1987 at Sacred Heart Church and we are celebrating a 25th Anniversary of our Council on July 21, 2012 beginning with a Mass, Installation of new Officers for 2012-2013, the 4th Degree Honor Guard, a dinner, guest speaker Joe Ramirez – State Deputy for the State Council of the Knights of Columbus, reflections of our past by Past Grand Knights, and of course, an anniversary cake for all.  Over 100 Knights, their wives, guests, and widows were in attendance at this milestone event.

Parish Picnic – held last weekend in August

Once a year our parish comes together at Sacred Heart Church and School for a parish picnic to celebrate and have fun.  The Knights of Columbus at Sacred Heart help support and organize this wonderful event for familes.  Our members provide much of the leadership and manpower to make this a memorable event for our parish.

Men’s Social – held in September

There is a men’s social at the parish center starting at 6:30pm.  There will be big screen TV’s to watch an NFL game.  We will have plenty of  tailgate food and adult beverages for enjoyment during the game.  And since we are close to the Iowa Hawkeye’s vs. Iowa State game, Brother Knights and thier guests are encouraged to wear your favorite team colors and listen to a representative from each university talk about their team.  There will also be some team challenges games (with prizes) so come prepared to have a good time.  If you know of someone who might be interested in becoming a Knight, bring them along.

Habitat for Humanity – Conducted Monthly

We support this activity every month by having Council members volunteer their time, talent, and skills to help build needed housing in the Des Moines area.  Habitat for Humanity is a worth cause and is an activity that makes a long term impact in the greater Des Moines area.

Pancake Breakfast – Held Monthly

Our regular monthly pancake breakfast season begin in September.  Each month our breakfasts are dedicated to helping our Council raise funds for various parish ministries and for other worthwhile charitable causes.  We continue to make this happen through the end of May.

Tootsie Roll Drive – Held in late August Annually

We collect donations from five stores (2 Dahl’s; 2 HyVee’s; and 1 Fareway store) every year during our Tootsie Roll Drive.  We had approximately 70 volunteers work two hour shifts collecting funds for the Mentally Chanaged.  We successfully collected over $5,000 each year and divided it up among  five local charities who support our Council’s interest in this area.  This is a huge event and undertaking for us every year.

KOC Regular Monthly Meeting – the third Monday of each month

Our regular KOC meeting are held each month in our Parish Center. Rosary begins at 6:00 pm in the church; our meeting begins at 6:30 pm; and a catered dinner follows immediately.  Please consider joining our Council and becoming involved in our Council.
